The Red Hat Society was born in Fullerton California in November 1997 when Sue Ellen Cooper gave her friend a copy of
Jenny Joseph's poem 'Warning'
and a bright red fedora hat to celebrate
the friend's 55th birthday.
The first ever meeting took place on 25th April 1998
when Sue Ellen and 5 friends met for afternoon tea
dressed in purple clothes and each sporting a bright red hat.
From the first meeting of The Founding Chapter of Fullerton, California the rise and rise of this wonderful disorganisation has been beyond what could have ever been expected way back in 1998.
In 2011 the Red Hat Society saw its first red hat
and purple feather boa go on display at the
Smithsonian Instution's
National Museum of American History.
Today, there are over 20,000 Red Hat chapters in the USA, 41,000 worldwide and more than 100 of those are here in Britain.
The Red Hat Society exists to empower women and fill them with confidence, pride and enthusiasm for life. As a vivacious society of women who celebrate life we encourage strong bonds of sisterhood, connecting like-minded women around the world to go out there and have fun together and do all the nice things in life.
The Honiton Honeys are bringing that ethos to East Devon and beyond and hope to establish a wide social network for all lively women who seek the well-behaved company of other women in pursuit of
FUN, FRIENDSHIP, FREEDOM,
FULFILLMENT & FITNESS.
